• Lymphoma (13.05): aggressive non-Hodgkin lymphoma that is persistent or recurrent after initial therapy; indolent lymphoma requiring more than one treatment regimen within 12 months; Hodgkin lymphoma that fails to achieve complete remission or recurs within 12 months; or mantle cell lymphoma.
• Multiple myeloma (13.07): failure to respond to or progressive disease following initial anticancer therapy, confirmed by serum/urine protein electrophoresis and bone marrow findings.

The Bone Marrow or Stem Cell Transplant Rule

If your treatment plan includes a bone marrow or stem cell transplant, the SSA applies a specific protocol every applicant should understand:

Under SSA guidelines, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, and chronic-phase CML treated with a bone marrow or stem cell transplant are considered automatically disabling for at least 12 months from the date of transplant. For acute leukemia and the accelerated/blast phase of CML, disability is considered for at least 24 months from diagnosis or relapse, or 12 months from transplant — whichever is later.

After that period, the SSA conducts a Continuing Disability Review (CDR) to evaluate lingering residuals — such as Graft-versus-Host Disease (GVHD), organ damage, or profound immunosuppression — to determine whether benefits continue.
